City officials and loved ones of Dom DeMarco came together at the corner of East 15th Street and Avenue J to reveal a new street sign honoring the iconic pizzaiolo. The sign now reads ‘Domenico ‘Dom’ DeMarco Way’ in memory of the man behind Di Fara Pizza.
Dom DeMarco, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 85, was the heart and soul of the beloved pizzeria in Midwood. He brought his passion for pizza from Italy to New York City when he opened Di Fara in 1965. Over the years, his pies gained a reputation as some of the best in the city, attracting locals and tourists alike.
In addition to the original location on Avenue J, Di Fara expanded to a second spot in Manhattan, solidifying its status as a culinary landmark. Despite the growth and success, the pizzeria has stayed true to its roots, continuing to serve up delicious slices just as Dom DeMarco did for more than five decades.
Council Member Justin Brannan expressed his excitement about the street renaming on social media, highlighting the significance of the corner in Midwood where food enthusiasts have flocked for years to savor Dom’s creations. The dedication of ‘Domenico ‘Dom’ DeMarco Way’ ensures that his influence and legacy will endure in the neighborhood.
At the One Bite Pizza Festival, attendees had the chance to taste the famous pies and hear from those closest to Dom DeMarco. Shop manager John Sullivan and DeMarco’s daughter, Maggie, emphasized their commitment to preserving his traditions and recipes, both in the food they serve and the new name of the street corner.
Brooklyn has lost a culinary icon in Dom DeMarco, but the renaming of the street serves as a fitting tribute to his lasting impact on the community. The legacy of Di Fara Pizza and its founder will continue to inspire pizza lovers and food enthusiasts for generations to come.
