The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which operates under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has issued a serious warning for users who have Android OS versions 12, 12L, 13, and 14. This warning comes in light of the discovery of multiple vulnerabilities in the Android operating system. CERT-In has pointed out that these vulnerabilities could expose users to various cyber threats like unauthorized access to personal information, privilege escalation, and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, which could disrupt the functioning of the device significantly.

The government body has emphasized that these vulnerabilities are present in different parts of Android, making the situation even more serious. The flaws are specifically found in the Framework, System, Google Play system updates, particularly in the Remote Key Provisioning subcomponent, Kernel, and various other external components provided by technology companies like Arm, Imagination Technologies, Unisoc, and Qualcomm. If these vulnerabilities are exploited, attackers could potentially access sensitive information stored on the device or take control of the system by gaining elevated privileges.

In today’s age, where smartphones are used for sensitive tasks like online banking, accessing confidential information, and sharing real-time locations, having strong security measures in place is crucial. Devices that run on outdated Android versions without the latest security patches are at a higher risk of being targeted by cybercriminals. These older versions often have vulnerabilities that have not been patched, making it easier for attackers to exploit them.

Although Google regularly releases updates to fix these vulnerabilities, many users delay installing them due to concerns about data usage, insufficient storage space, or the inconvenience of updating. However, neglecting these updates can leave devices vulnerable to attacks. CERT-In strongly recommends that users regularly check for and install security patches from Google to safeguard their data and ensure the security of their Android devices.
