Miley Cyrus is facing a legal battle after being sued for allegedly copying Bruno Mars in the creation of her Grammy-winning hit, “Flowers.” Tempo Music Investments, a music investment platform, claims that Cyrus’ 2023 smash single shares numerous musical similarities to Mars’ 2012 ballad “When I Was Your Man.” The investment platform, which asserts ownership of a share of the copyright for Mars’ track, alleges that the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions, and lyrics of “Flowers” were intentionally taken from the “24K Magic” hitmaker’s song. Despite this legal action, Mars himself is not named as a plaintiff in the filing.

Reps for both Mars, aged 38, and Cyrus, aged 31, have not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding this lawsuit. Earlier this year, Cyrus received her first Grammys after “Flowers” won record of the year and best pop solo performance, triumphing over Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish. During her acceptance speech for record of the year, Cyrus expressed her hopes that the award would not change anything in her life, emphasizing the importance of cherishing the beauty that existed before the accolades.

The investment firm, asserting ownership of a share of Mars’ song, continues to maintain that “Flowers” copies the melody, harmony, and chorus from “When I Was Your Man.” Cyrus, who took home two Grammys for “Flowers” in February, is rumored to have written the song about her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, whom she was married to from 2018 to 2020. Despite her success at the Grammys, Cyrus questioned why it took so long for her to earn recognition from the Recording Academy, reflecting on her decades-long career in the music industry.

In an interview with W Magazine in June, Cyrus pondered the measurement of success in the music industry, expressing her confusion over the disparity between her years of experience and her recent Grammy wins. While acknowledging her pride in her accomplishments, Cyrus highlighted the challenges she faced in being taken seriously by the industry. With a career that began at the age of 12 on Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana,” Cyrus has since transitioned into a successful music career, with hits like “Party in the U.S.A.” and “Wrecking Ball” dominating the charts.
