Benji Gregory, the former child star known for his role as Brian Tanner on the hit series “Alf,” tragically passed away at the age of 46. The Maricopa Medical Examiner’s office has determined that his cause of death was an accident due to environmental heat exposure in the setting of hepatic cirrhosis, a condition that results in liver fibrosis.

The National Library of Medicine explains that liver fibrosis occurs when scar tissue forms in the liver following a chronic injury, leading to loss of function and the development of cirrhosis. Gregory’s tragic death was the result of a combination of heat exposure and his underlying liver condition.

Gregory’s sister, Rebecca Pfaffinger, took to Facebook to confirm his passing and shed light on his struggles with depression, bipolar disorder, and a sleep disorder. She described him as a beloved son, brother, and uncle who brought joy and laughter to those around him.

Despite his untimely death, Gregory left behind a rich legacy in the entertainment industry. In addition to his iconic role on “Alf,” he also made guest appearances on popular shows like “The A-Team” and “The Twilight Zone” in the ’80s. He even starred in a TV pilot called “Fenster Hall” and appeared in Disney’s “Mr. Boogedy” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

After stepping away from Hollywood in 2003, Gregory enlisted in the US Navy and served as an aerographer’s mate before being honorably discharged in 2005. His commitment to serving his country was commendable, showcasing a different side of the talented actor who captured the hearts of fans around the world.

The passing of Benji Gregory serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues and underlying medical conditions. Despite his struggles, Gregory’s memory lives on through his work on screen and the impact he had on those who knew and loved him.

The loss of Benji Gregory adds to the tragic list of “Alf” cast members who have passed away over the years. Michu Meszaros, who played the lovable alien Alf, died in 2016 at the age of 76, and Max Wright, who portrayed the father on the show, lost his battle with cancer in 2018 at the age of 75. The legacy of “Alf” endures, but the loss of these talented individuals is deeply felt by fans and colleagues alike.
