The Bronx Struggles with Gun Violence

Over the weekend, the Bronx was once again plagued by gun violence, with a double shooting that resulted in the death of one man and injuries to another. The incident occurred on Saturday night at the intersection of Sheridan Avenue and McClellan Street in Grand Concourse. Police from the 44th Precinct responded to the scene around 10:35 p.m. after reports of gunshots.

Upon arrival, officers found 31-year-old Sakou Saho, a resident of Mott Haven, with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. Another man, aged 49, had suffered a graze wound to his stomach. Both individuals were rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where Saho was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The 49-year-old man is expected to survive his injuries, according to police reports. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

This tragic incident marks the fifth outbreak of gun violence in the Bronx within just four days, with three of those incidents resulting in fatalities. The recent victims include Rafael Vasquez, a 32-year-old man who was fatally shot on East 180th Street and Creston Avenue on September 11, and Mahmudo Jabbi, a 24-year-old man who was found shot multiple times on Anthony Avenue near East Tremont Avenue on September 13.

Rising Gun Violence in the Bronx

The Bronx has seen an increase in shooting incidents in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 302 individuals wounded by gunfire so far this year, as opposed to 285 during the same period in 2023. However, despite the rise in shooting victims, the murder rates in the Bronx have actually decreased, according to NYPD data. The latest CompStat report indicates that 75 people have been killed this year, a decrease from the 97 fatalities reported during the same timeframe last year.

The prevalence of gun violence in the Bronx is a pressing concern for residents and law enforcement alike. The rise in shooting incidents underscores the need for increased community engagement, targeted interventions, and comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of violence in the borough.

Community Response and Call for Information

In the wake of these tragic events, community members are urged to come forward with any information that may help authorities in their investigations. Anyone with information regarding Saturday night’s shooting is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA). Tips can also be submitted online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or via X (formerly Twitter) @NYPDTips. All calls and messages will be kept confidential.

The willingness of community members to provide information and cooperate with law enforcement is crucial in solving these cases and preventing future violence. By working together, we can create safer neighborhoods and ensure that incidents of gun violence are met with swift and effective responses.

As the Bronx grapples with the aftermath of these senseless acts of violence, it is essential for residents, officials, and community organizations to come together in solidarity and support. By standing united against gun violence, we can work towards a safer and more peaceful future for all individuals in the Bronx and beyond.
