Join the Great Broadway Sweep to Clean Up NYC

New York City is known for its bustling streets, iconic landmarks, and vibrant culture. However, amidst the hustle and bustle, litter can often be found strewn across sidewalks and streets. This not only detracts from the beauty of the city but also poses a threat to the environment and wildlife. In an effort to combat this issue, the city’s sanitation department, along with its designated nonprofit organization, is calling on volunteers to join the 2nd annual Great Broadway Sweep during Climate Week NYC.

The Sanitation Foundation, the official nonprofit of the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), is spearheading this citywide effort to promote cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and waste reduction. From September 21 to October 6, volunteers will come together to remove litter from the Broadways in each borough, with the goal of creating a cleaner and more sustainable city for all residents and visitors.

Why is Litter a Problem?

Litter not only mars the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods but also has far-reaching consequences for the environment and wildlife. According to environmental research, New Yorkers generate approximately 12,000 tons of waste every day, contributing to the litter problem in the city. Street litter can be particularly harmful to animals, especially aquatic wildlife, as rainwater can carry trash into storm drains and local waterways.

Animals often mistake trash for food, leading to health issues, sickness, and even death. Additionally, wildlife can become entangled in certain types of litter, further endangering their well-being. By participating in the Great Broadway Sweep, volunteers can make a tangible impact in reducing litter and protecting the environment for future generations.

Get Involved in the Great Broadway Sweep

Volunteers are needed in each borough to participate in the Great Broadway Sweep events. All necessary tools and equipment will be provided, and each cleanup event will feature special guests, live music, activities, and environmental education. The schedule for the Great Broadway Sweep is as follows:

– Sat., Sept. 21 – Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
– Tues., Sept. 24 – Union Square, Manhattan; 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
– Wed., Sept. 25 – Flatiron, Manhattan; 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
– Thurs., Sept. 26 – Columbus Circle, Manhattan; 2 p.m.–4 p.m.
– Sat., Sept. 28 – Marble Hill, Bronx; 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
– Sat., Oct. 5 – Elmhurst, Queens; 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
– Sun., Oct. 6 – West Brighton, Staten Island; 10 a.m.–12 p.m.

The Union Square cleanup will focus on food waste and feature experts, tabling, demos, and giveaways to raise awareness about the city’s mandatory composting program starting on October 6. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. Children are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by an adult.

Last year’s Great Broadway Sweep was a resounding success, with over 500 volunteers collecting more than 2,500 pounds of litter across nine locations. This year, organizers aim to expand the initiative to all boroughs and engage even more volunteers in the cleanup efforts.
