A co-owner of a fancy car dealership in Florida is apparently stepping down after allegedly sending an antisemitic text to a customer. Naveen Maraj, a co-owner of Pompano Beach Champion Motorsports/Champion Porsche, reportedly made the offensive remark in a text to a potential customer after learning they were considering going to a different dealer. The incident was first reported by BocaNewsNow.com.
The offensive text allegedly read, “But as usual you behave like a spoiled Jew c— who thinks you’re special but you’re not. You not buying a car from me is like a gift from god.” This shocking display of antisemitism has sparked outrage, with organizations like StopAntiSemitism condemning the behavior and urging clients to take their business elsewhere. The Anti-Defamation League has been contacted for comment on the matter.
Champion General Manager Mike Peters stated that Maraj has decided to resign from his position at the dealership and step down from his managerial roles with immediate effect. Peters emphasized that the dealership is committed to fostering an environment rooted in respect, professionalism, and integrity. The incident has served as a reminder of the importance of upholding these values both internally and externally. While Maraj’s comments were deemed offensive and inexcusable, Peters mentioned that Maraj and the customer, John Wolff, have had a personal friendship for over 14 years. Despite this, Peters acknowledged that the language used was inappropriate and did not align with the dealership’s standards of conduct and mutual respect that have been upheld for over 38 years.
In a further explanation, Peters highlighted that the offensive remark was made in a personal capacity and was not reflective of Maraj’s role or responsibilities at the dealership. He mentioned that the friendship between Maraj and Wolff included a level of casual banter and familiarity that may have been misinterpreted when viewed outside of their private context. Wolff, on the other hand, expressed disbelief at the notion that it would be acceptable within their friendship for Maraj to use such language. Peters recognized the weight of words, regardless of context or intent, and expressed regret for any discomfort or confusion caused by the incident. Maraj personally apologized to Wolff for his remarks.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact of words and the importance of maintaining professionalism and respect in all interactions. The dealership is taking this opportunity to reinforce these values and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. Maraj’s resignation signifies a commitment to upholding the dealership’s standards of conduct and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.
