The Metropolitan Opera has kicked off its 2024-25 season with the premiere of “Grounded,” a compelling opera based on an award-winning play by George Brandt. The story follows Jess, a fighter pilot who falls in love, gets pregnant, and is forced to leave the military. Instead of returning to her former role, she is reassigned to flying drones, leading to a significant mental adjustment.

Brandt, the playwright behind the original work, provided the libretto for the opera. The music for “Grounded” was composed by Jeanine Tesori, making her the first female composer to open a season at the Met in its 141-year history. Brandt expressed his excitement about collaborating with Tesori, whom he admired even before working together.

Adding depth to the production are Jason Thompson and Kaitlyn Pietras, responsible for creating the visual concepts displayed on the LED walls. Thompson, making his Met Opera debut, explained that the video elements are integral to the storytelling, representing Jess’s psyche and the internal struggle she faces as a drone pilot.

“Grounded” will be running at the Metropolitan Opera until October 19, alongside other season-opening productions like Puccini’s “Tosca” and Offenbach’s “Les Contes D’Hoffman.” For those interested in attending, ticket information can be found on the Met Opera’s official website.

The collaboration between Brandt, Tesori, Thompson, and Pietras promises a unique and engaging experience for opera enthusiasts. “Grounded” explores themes of love, duty, and the psychological impact of warfare, offering audiences a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant performance. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this groundbreaking production at one of the world’s most renowned opera houses.
