The Philadelphia Phillies secured a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory against the New York Mets in Game 2 of the NLDS at Citizens Bank Park. Nick Castellanos delivered the game-winning single down the left-field line off Mets reliever Tylor Megill, keeping the Phillies alive in the series after dropping the opener.
The Mets had a remarkable comeback in the top of the ninth inning, overturning a 6-4 deficit thanks to Mark Vientos’ second home run of the game off Phillies closer Matt Strahm to tie the game. However, Bryson Stott’s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth off Mets closer Edwin Diaz gave the Phillies a two-run advantage.
The Phillies squandered a 3-0 lead earlier in the game, with Luis Severino allowing back-to-back home runs to Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos to tie the game. Vientos had a standout performance for the Mets, hitting a two-run home run in the third inning and becoming the first player in National League history to record three extra-base hits in a single postseason game.
Despite the Mets briefly taking the lead, the Phillies managed to secure the victory with Castellanos’ walk-off heroics. The series is now tied at 1-1, with Game 3 set to take place in New York.
It was a rare occurrence for the Mets to take an early multi-run lead, as they hadn’t led by two or more runs in the first three innings in 14 games. Mets starter Luis Severino found his groove after escaping early jams and retired 13 of 15 batters faced from the end of the second to the end of the fifth inning.
Both teams showcased their offensive firepower throughout the game, with several lead changes and dramatic moments keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The Mets will look to bounce back in Game 3 and regain the series lead as they return to New York for the next matchup.
