In a surprising turn of events, the action RPG Wayfinder has announced a partnership with the popular Dungeons & Dragons podcast-turned-enterprise Critical Role. This collaboration will bring some upcoming cosmetic-only DLC to the game, coinciding with its 1.0 release.
Originally, Wayfinder was announced and launched as a free-to-play online-only multiplayer game. However, after losing its publisher earlier this year, the game shifted to a single-player experience with optional co-op. Developer Airship Syndicate has faced challenges leading up to the game’s launch, but the Critical Role collaboration offers a promising sign for the future.
The Critical Role supporter pack, set to launch alongside Wayfinder’s 1.0 release on October 21, 2024, will include four character personas based on the Vox Machina Critical Role campaign, a trinket mount and saddle, four character charms, 15 housing items, and 10 sprays for players to enjoy. While most of the content included in the collaboration has not been revealed, early glimpses have been shared by Airship Syndicate.
One notable aspect of this collaboration is that Wayfinder does not have an in-game store to pressure players into spending money. The Critical Role pack will be available for purchase directly on the same digital storefront where the game is bought, such as Steam or the PlayStation Store, for $19.99. This straightforward approach eliminates the need for players to deal with in-game currency and simplifies the purchasing process.
CEO of Airship Syndicate, Joe Madureria, has hinted at the possibility of more crossover packs in the future, stating, “If players love this Supporter Pack, we’d love to make more–with Critical Role, and other IP’s in the future!” Despite the challenges faced during its early access period, Wayfinder seems to have found its stride with this exciting collaboration.
