Severe Flooding Hits Charleston: Coastal Storm Impact
A powerful storm off the Carolina coast is causing significant damage, with high winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rain affecting the region. The storm began to impact South Carolina, particularly Charleston and Colleton counties, leading to major flood levels in Charleston Harbor and moderate flooding at Ft. Pulaski tide gauge.
Charleston City Police have closed numerous roads due to saltwater flooding, and coastal flooding has also been observed in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In North Carolina, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is warning of dangerous conditions, with beaches closed between Rodanthe and Buxton due to debris hazards.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Charleston and Colleton counties in South Carolina to prepare for the incoming storm. In addition, a Storm Watch has been issued for much of coastal North Carolina, with expected high winds and dangerous seas.
While cities like Raleigh and Greensboro are expected to receive moderate rainfall amounts, coastal communities are at risk of experiencing more severe weather, potentially leading to flooding. Mariners are advised to take precautions, and coastal inundation levels of 2-4 feet could impact the Outer Banks, causing issues with erosion and overwash of Highway 12.
In South Carolina, several uninhabited homes have already collapsed into the ocean, and beach closures are common in Rodanthe and Buxton due to hazardous debris during extreme weather events. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is monitoring road conditions along the Outer Banks and may close roads as needed.
Despite the storm’s impact, slow improvements are anticipated over the weekend as the system moves eastward. Astronomical king tides, influenced by the full Moon cycle, are expected to keep water levels elevated for an extended period, leading to ongoing flooding concerns.
