Shortcut Labs has recently achieved a significant milestone by transforming its smart home hubs, the Flic Hub LR and the Flic Hub Mini, into controllers for Matter devices. By releasing an update on Friday, the company has made it possible for its devices to function as independent hubs for Matter devices without the need to be part of larger ecosystems like Apple, Amazon, Google, or Samsung. Joacim Westlund Prändel, the cofounder of Shortcut Labs, emphasized that while Flic with Matter can control Apple Home devices once they are paired, the reverse is not true. Despite this limitation, users can integrate Flic 2 buttons with Apple’s app through the existing HomeKit integration, provided they are using the Flic Hub LR. Additionally, Shortcut Labs does not store device data on cloud servers, ensuring user privacy and security.
The introduction of Matter controller functionality to Shortcut’s hubs is a free update that will be available starting Friday. This update will extend Matter support to all Flic products, enabling compatibility with devices that adhere to the Matter standard. Notably, the Flic Twist, a smart button featuring a dial for tasks like adjusting lights or smart blinds, can now interact with other Matter-enabled products, offering innovative possibilities for users.
In an effort to enhance user experience, Shortcut Labs has designed the setup process for Matter devices to be transparent and user-friendly. Unlike other platforms where device onboarding can be complex and opaque, the Flic app provides real-time updates during the automated setup process, making it easier for users to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
