A tragic incident occurred in Bay Ridge on Saturday morning when a 46-year-old man was fatally struck by a pickup truck driver on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway near 86th Street. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that the crash took place around 5:30 a.m. as the pedestrian was walking on the roadway.
According to police, the driver of a 2012 Nissan Frontier, a 36-year-old man, was traveling eastbound on the BQE when he hit the victim. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found the man unresponsive with severe head trauma. Despite their efforts, emergency medical services pronounced him dead on the spot. Sadly, several vehicles unknowingly ran over his body after the initial collision.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made. However, the driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. This tragic event marks the second pedestrian death in Bay Ridge this month, following another incident on September 11 involving a 74-year-old man who was killed in a hit-and-run as he crossed Ridge Boulevard at Bay Ridge Avenue.
It is concerning to note that three crashes have been reported in the same area of the BQE near 86th Street over the past five years, resulting in seven motorist injuries. This highlights the need for improved safety measures and vigilance among both pedestrians and drivers in the area.
Incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that pedestrians face on busy roadways, especially during early morning hours. It is crucial for both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and follow traffic laws to prevent such devastating accidents from reoccurring.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time. Stay tuned for updates on the investigation as more details unfold.
