The Brooklyn Bar Association recently hosted its annual coat drive in partnership with various committees and organizations to help those in need during the winter season. The event kicked off with a “Cocktails & Coat Drive” mixer, where attendees could drop off gently worn winter coats for men, women, and children.
Members who missed the event can still contribute by bringing their donations to the Remsen Street office until Nov. 8. The coats collected will be distributed by New York Cares, a volunteer organization, to those who require them. Additionally, a fundraiser will provide warm meals to New Yorkers in need.
Joy Thompson, chair of the BBA’s diversity committee, shared that the committee had already exceeded its fundraising goal of $500. She emphasized the importance of giving back, mentioning that her dedication to helping others was inspired by her parents.
Pamela Walker, co-chair of the BBA’s membership committee, highlighted the significance of supporting the community, especially during the cold winter months. She encouraged participants to donate their extra coats, as it could make a significant difference in someone’s life.
The collaboration between the BBA’s LGBTQ+ committee and the LGBTQ+ Law Section of the New York State Bar Association showcased the power of community outreach. By working together, these groups aim to support marginalized communities and promote inclusivity.
Both Christina Golkin and Sam Buchbauer emphasized the importance of coming together as a community, especially in challenging times for the LGBTQ+ community. Golkin noted the increase in anti-LGBTQ+ bills in recent years, making initiatives like the coat drive even more crucial.
The BBA’s commitment to giving back extends beyond the annual coat drive. The association also engages in voter registration and voting drives to support Brooklyn residents. President Anthony Vaughn Jr. reiterated the importance of serving the broader community and providing essential support to those in need.
Overall, the coat drive not only provided warmth to those in need but also fostered a sense of community spirit among participants. Through collective efforts and a commitment to giving back, the Brooklyn Bar Association continues to make a positive impact on the lives of Brooklyn residents.
