As a proud New Yorker, I am excited to share the amazing progress our city has made over the past year. The Mayor’s Management Report, our city’s report card, highlights the significant achievements we have accomplished. Crime rates have decreased, illegal guns and mopeds have been removed from our streets, affordable housing and new school buildings have been constructed, and billions of dollars have been returned to working-class New Yorkers.
The city’s economy is thriving, with job numbers on the rise and crime rates falling, creating a safer and more prosperous environment for all residents. Our police officers have been working diligently to ensure the safety of New Yorkers, resulting in more felony crime arrests, quality-of-life summonses, and transit enforcement efforts. Additionally, the shutdown of illegal smoke shops through “Operation Padlock to Protect” has been a success, with over 1,000 illegal cannabis shops closed.
In terms of public safety, efforts have been made to protect pedestrians and cyclists, such as the installation of more protected bike lanes and speed reducers. The seizure of illegal mopeds and scooters has also contributed to fewer traffic fatalities for pedestrians and bicyclists. Moreover, steps have been taken to enhance the cleanliness and safety of the city, including doubling the rate of lead abatement at NYCHA properties and clearing catch basins faster to prevent flooding.
The city has also focused on creating job opportunities and increasing affordability for residents. Unemployment rates have decreased, particularly among Black and Latino communities, and more families have accessed subsidized child care. Additionally, efforts have been made to connect young people in NYCHA housing with job opportunities and provide low-cost or no-cost health services through NYC Care.
Furthermore, the construction of affordable and supportive housing has been a priority, resulting in a significant increase in the number of affordable units built and preserved for seniors. More New Yorkers in shelters have also been able to transition into permanent housing, demonstrating the city’s commitment to addressing homelessness.
While there is still work to be done, the progress made over the past year is a testament to the dedication and hard work of city workers. By continuing to focus on transparency and accountability, we can further improve our services and deliver even better results for New Yorkers in the future. New York City is on the right path, and I am honored to lead a team that is dedicated to making our city better than ever.
