FDNY Graduates 289 Probationary Firefighters at Queens College
Close to 300 probationary firefighters recently graduated from the FDNY Fire Academy after more than four months of intensive training. The graduation ceremony took place at Queens College on December 27, marking the final graduating class of 2024. The ceremony was held at the prestigious Colden Auditorium on Reeves Avenue in Flushing, where FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker presided over the event.
A Diverse Graduating Class
The graduating class of probationary firefighters comprised a mix of individuals, including four women and 28 veterans from various branches of the military such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. These brave individuals will now be assigned to firehouses across the city, ready to serve and protect the community.
Comprehensive Training
During their 18-week training at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island, the graduates underwent rigorous instruction in all aspects of firefighting. This included training in fire suppression, medical response, hazardous materials handling, collapse and confined space rescues, auto extrication, building inspections, and procedures for engine and ladder operations.
Words of Encouragement
Commissioner Tucker commended the new recruits for their dedication and commitment to public service. He emphasized the noble nature of their chosen career and the sacrifices they make to keep others safe. Chief of Department John Esposito also encouraged the graduates to continually strive for excellence, reminding them that being a firefighter is more than just a job—it’s a calling.
Empowering Women in the FDNY
The FDNY has been actively working to increase the representation of women in the department. While women currently make up only 1% of the 11,000 firefighters in the FDNY, efforts are being made to diversify the workforce. The recent graduation class saw four women among the 289 probationary firefighters, representing a small but significant step towards gender equality in the department.
As the new firefighters embark on their careers, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and values instilled in them during their training. Their journey as probationary firefighters will shape the foundation of their future in the FDNY, as they continue to uphold the proud traditions of the department and serve the people of New York City with honor and dedication.
