AARP New York is taking action to improve pedestrian safety in New York City with their new initiative, Taking it to the Streets: Improving Pedestrian Safety in Your Community. The organization is calling on concerned citizens to participate in a hands-on sidewalk survey to assess the safety of sidewalks in their neighborhoods.

The initiative, which runs from November 14 to 22, allows New Yorkers to download a form from the AARP New York website and conduct a “walk audit” to evaluate the condition of streets and sidewalks in their area. This data will be used to create a comprehensive report that will be presented to elected officials.

While AARP is known for advocating for older Americans, people of all ages are encouraged to participate in the walk audits. The need to address sidewalk problems is urgent, with 61 pedestrians already killed in traffic accidents in the first half of 2024, according to Transportation Alternatives.

Beth Finkel, AARP New York state director, emphasized the importance of safe streets for everyone, regardless of age. The walk audit form includes questions about crosswalk timing, pavement conditions, and other factors that impact pedestrian safety. Participants are urged to share their feedback to help improve the quality of sidewalks in the city.

Local governments have shown support for initiatives like Taking it to the Streets, recognizing the importance of maintaining safe streets and sidewalks for livability. AARP has been working on this issue for a long time and hopes to make a difference with their walk audit survey.

Participants in the walk audit will have the opportunity to evaluate intersections and assign grades based on their observations. The results of the audits will be compiled into a comprehensive report to highlight areas for improvement and advocate for change.
