Brooklyn is about to welcome its newest hotspot for pickleball enthusiasts with the opening of PKLYN on October 6. The five-court, 18,000-square-foot facility in Gowanus is set to become the go-to spot for year-round indoor pickleball fun. Brooklyn Paper had the opportunity to take a sneak peek inside the state-of-the-art venue on September 25, and the excitement is palpable.
### The Rise of Pickleball in Brooklyn
Pickleball, a unique combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton, has been gaining popularity in recent years. Originally invented in 1965, the sport saw a surge in interest during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its ability to facilitate social distancing. David Friedman, the owner of PKLYN, has been a dedicated pickleball player for eight years. During the pandemic, he and his fellow players converted handball courts at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2 into pickleball courts, creating a sense of community and camaraderie.
### A Creative Approach to Securing Space
Friedman’s journey to establishing PKLYN was not without its challenges. After years of searching for the perfect indoor location, he found the ideal space at 80 4th St. in Gowanus. However, during negotiations, it seemed like the space might be taken by an event company. In a bold move, Friedman enlisted the help of a rapper on Fiverr to convey why a pickleball facility was the best fit for the space. His unconventional approach caught the attention of the landlord, ultimately leading to the successful lease agreement and the start of construction in February.
### A Unique Pickleball Experience at PKLYN
PKLYN’s facility boasts five professional-grade asphalt courts, ensuring an optimal playing experience for pickleball enthusiasts. The venue’s high ceilings, 25 skylights, and ample windows create a bright and airy atmosphere, while the dark purple walls, adorned only with the company’s logo, provide a minimalist backdrop that allows players to focus on the game. To address the noise issue associated with pickleball, the facility features high-end sound paneling, reducing the loud and high-pitched sounds typical of the sport.
The central mezzanine offers spectators a prime vantage point to watch the action on the courts, while the bar and lounge area provide a cozy space to relax and socialize. The full-service bar offers a selection of food and drinks from local vendors, including Italian sandwiches from Alidoro, tap beer from Threes Brewing, and specialty cocktails from Social Hour. PKLYN aims to not only keep Brooklynites active but also serve as a hub for community events, networking mixers, and themed plays.
